Education is the best path out of poverty for orphaned and vulnerable children. Umoja provides the maize and beans for lunch for these children which is the only meal they have for the day. Over our fifteen year history, we have encouraged and helped children stay in school to graduate and go on secondary school. This year -(2022)- all of the final year Umoja kids transitioned to secondary school! This program is all about the children.
We will need to raise $50 per child to cover the costs for all needy students. The trifecta of weather conditions in Kenya, the COVID-19 pandemic, and worldwide inflation, has increased the costs of the grain and the transportation. We have seen an immediate increase in the number of elementary-aged students qualifying for our School Lunch program. In 2021, 4,029 students qualified. In 2022, we are serving 4,371 students. We also provide additional weekend and holiday meals for 150 child-headed households.
Just a small donation of $50 or more will go a long way to helping me meet my goal for Umoja Partnership, a locally-led, globally-supported, interfaith partnership.
