Step Up 4 Education: Funding the Future of Chulaimbo, Kenya
Due to the profound success of our primary school lunch program and Umoja's portfolio of support services, more children than ever are finishing primary school. In addition, an increasing number of students performed well enough on their end-of-primary school exam (KCPE) to qualify for scholarships through Umoja Partnership's tuition assistance program. In January, we were able to provide tuition scholarships for 378 secondary school students and stipends (partial scholarships) to 400 secondary school students. 100% of our Class 8 graduates matriculated to Secondary School for the last three years.
In Kenya, the average cost of one year of secondary school is $250 per student. Without financial support, our students simply are unable to continue their education. As a result, when we fund a Form 1 student in their first year of high school, we commit to funding them through secondary and a chance to attend post-secondary educational opportunities (university, college, trade school, etc.).
In 2025, there will be no Form 1 students as Kenya is implementing their new curriculum. The grade 8 students will proceed to Junior High School. So that means we will be continuing the support for students already enrolled in Secondary School. we will support 100 students preparing to enter high school in addition to the students we supported last year. Ultimately, our vision is to raise enough funds to ensure that Umoja Partnership can provide every student who qualifies for a $250 tuition scholarship to secondary school, and we need your help!
The goal of the 2023 - 2024 Step UP 4 Education Campaign is to raise $70,000 which will enable us to close the gap between those who qualify for our assistance and the number of children we can fund for secondary school. We also have a $20,000 matching offer to make your donation count more. Every donation you make up to $20,000 will be matched 100%.
Your contribution provides a brighter future for students like Stacy. She joined the Umoja family in Class 6 (6th grade) at Mawembe Kodero Primary School and started receiving school lunch and other Umoja support. She received a scholarship to attend Bar Union High School for secondary school. In 2019, Stacy was the First Female President of Bar Union High Secondary School since 1983. She also served as a Project Assistant for Umoja in 2020 and is now currently in her second year at Sigalagala Polytechnical School working toward her diploma in Quantity Survey.
"I am praying that someday in the future I become a prominent woman leader nationwide in Kenya."
By supporting our Step UP 4 Education Campaign, you will bring light and hope to our motivated Kenyan students who lack the resources to continue their education beyond eight years of primary school.
Wouldn't it be wonderful if every Umoja scholar could attend high school?
